One of the 5 Commitments we ask parishioners to make is to get involved in Mission. Here at SPX, Mission is service outside of the parish. Christ's example in the Gospels of meeting not just their spiritual but also their physical needs challenges we who call ourselves disciples to do the same. It could be helping those in need, supporting causes through charitable donations, or helping advocate for change.
There are opportunities for people are of all ages, abilities, and stages of life.

St. Pius is partnering with St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Damascus Maryland to support a medical mission clinic in Honduras. Every winter and spring parishioners donate supplies and volunteers from the parish travel to Honduras for a week of service.
The next trip is January 26 - February 2, 2024
Adult Mission Group
Adults 18+ are invited to join their fellow parishioners in long (week) and short (day) mission trips to help communities in need. No previous experience is necessary.
Our next opportunity is serving in Delaware with Habitat for Humanity in Fall 2024. We'll be helping to renovate and build houses for those in need. No prior experience is needed, training and direction are provided. Interested? Contact Danny Jordan at [email protected].
S.O.M.E.
St. Pius Parishioners are an active part of the ministry of So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.) in Washington, DC. Once a month a group of parishioners brings a nourishing, ample breakfast to the S.O.M.E. District Facility and serves it to over 300 men, women, and children. Parishioners also participate in the ministry through providing bagged lunches once a month to guests at S.O.M.E. Helping Hands
The Helping Hands Ministry assists fellow parishioners with short term, non-financial needs during times of crisis. This ministry performs tasks such as cooking and delivering meals, taking a parishioner to Mass or to a doctor’s appointment, sitting with a home bound person while their caregiver runs an errand, helping with grocery shopping, light housework (such as doing a load of laundry, sweeping, doing the dishes), walking or feeding a pet, light yard work or shoveling a walkway. Sharing Pantry
The Sharing Pantry stores and distributes food and food coupons to the needy in our community, as well as Assumption Parish in the District, on an ongoing basis. Ministry to the Homebound
Our priests and trained parish members visit members that are home bound in homes, nursing facilities and hospitals to pray together and bring Holy Communion. To serve in this ministry, click HERE.
HOPE (Helping Out People with Emergencies)
HOPE at St. Pius X performs works of charity including referrals, resources and disbursement of funds to those in financial need. We meet once a month to discuss the services performed by individual members. Help is provided by a team of two. These teams rotate on a weekly basis and make personal contact with those in need in their own homes. For more information, please click HERE.
Green Team
The Green Team is a group of parishioners involved with raising awareness of environmental concerns within our community and throughout the world, and working on local projects which will improve the area. We pick up trash along Rt. 450 four times a year, sponsor gardening workshops, plant and help maintain an organic vegetable garden on City of Bowie property then donate all produce to the Bowie Interfaith Pantry. Shawl Ministry
This ministry serves the sick and shut-ins of our Parish as well as others by knitting and crocheting shawls for them. We meet in the Rectory on the 2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month after the 9 am Daily Mass. For more information please click HERE.
The Gabriel Network
Gabriel Network is a Christian ministry of loving service to women and families challenged with a crisis pregnancy. They've been helping women and children in Maryland and Washington, D.C. for more than twenty years, including families in Bowie. For more information or to volunteer click HERE.
Warm Nights
Warm Nights is a mission project that partners with organizations who help the homeless during the cold winter season. In years past, we have sheltered up to 30 people on site for a week. Due to COVID-19, this mission opportunity has looked different in recent years. However, the impact we can make on the lives of those served is still the same. This is an opportunity for you, your family or your group (scouts,school class, bridge club, prayer group, etc.) to help others during this cold season.
Giving Tree
This Advent Mission Project serves the Assumption Outreach Program, the Bowie Food Pantry & Emergency Aid Fund as well as provides support for women in unplanned pregnancies through the Gabriel Project. Gifts of baby items as well as monetary donations are a fantastic way to enter into the season of Christmas as we welcome the Christ Child. For more information, click HERE.
Families Helping Families
One of the many mission opportunities here at SPX, this program helps provide Thanksgiving Dinner to those in need. Families Helping Families is an opportunity for you and your family to help others this Thanksgiving. SPX will be distributing resources to members of our community who are in need of assistance to help them have a Thanksgiving Dinner. This mission serves St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Landover, Assumption Parish in S.E. Washington, and the Bowie Interfaith Food Pantry. For more information, click HERE.
